Pink diamond sold at auction in Hong Kong for a record 57.7 million dollars

“Due to its unique color, significant size and dazzling diamond cut, the Pink Williamson Star is both a natural wonder and a work of art that has taken its place among the most charming colored diamonds,” the GIA said in a statement.

Meanwhile, a pink Williamson Pink Star diamond went under the hammer at Sotheby’s in Hong Kong. For a stone weighing 11.15 carats, 57.7 million US dollars were paid, that is, more than 5 million dollars per carat, which became a new world record for the auction value of a diamond.

According to Sotheby’s Asia representative Wenhao Yu, the discovery of a pink diamond of jewelry quality of any size is extremely rare. Stones of this color are not often found, and no one knows exactly why they acquire such an unusual color.

The Tanzanian Williamson diamond mine, after which the new record holder was named, is famous for its pink diamonds. One of the most famous stones mined there is the 23–carat Williamson Pink Diamond, sparkling in one of the brooches that belonged to Queen Elizabeth II.
