Omega has announced the release of new chronographs Speedmaster Chronoscope Co-Axial Master Chronometer. This is a 43 x 12.8mm Metas/Master Chronometer certified watch with a new manual winding coaxial movement. The Calibre 9908 is a manual version of the automatic Calibre 9900 and has 44 stones, a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. The mechanism is decorated with Geneva waves, which, for the first time for the company, continue on the outer surfaces of the balance bridge.

The most notable feature of all models is the presence of three different chronograph scales. On the outer bezel is the usual Speedmaster tachymeter scale from 450 to 60 units. The tachymeter scale is usually described as a display of speed over a distance, and it can certainly be used for this, but it can be used to calculate any units of measurement per hour. For units less than 60, there is an additional internal tachymeter scale that counts down from 55 units per hour to 20 units per hour using a snail-type scale similar to that found on some vintage chronographs.

The telemetry is used to determine the distance to an event that is audible and visible. Classic examples are the time difference between watching lightning and hearing thunder, as well as between watching an artillery shell flash and listening to an explosion. Finally, there is a heart rate monitor. It is used to display the number of pulses (and therefore heartbeats) per minute. The scale is graduated by 30 pulsations. When you start the chronograph, you need to start counting the pulse beats, up to thirty. When thirty is counted, stop the chronograph and read the pulse value on the scale. If thirty pulses are counted and the chronometer stops at 60 on the scale, then the heart beats at a rate of 60 beats per minute.

The novelty will be presented in six stainless steel models: two with silver dials and blued hands; two with a blue dial and rhodium-plated hands; and two with silver dials and black additional dials with black hands. There will also be an additional model in a case made of Omega’s proprietary Bronze Gold alloy. The alloy consists of 37.5% gold with silver and palladium added, and this alloy is designed to provide warmth to bronze, but also to protect against corrosion better than conventional bronze alloys.

Omega Speedmaster Chronoscope Co-Axial Master Chronometer Chronograph is a watch loaded with functions. The Master Chronometer rating means that you can expect a maximum deviation in accuracy of 0 / + 5 seconds per day, plus sufficient resistance to magnetic fields, so the owner does not have to worry about the reliability of measurements. About the name: “Chronoscope”, like “chronograph”, has Greek roots and means, roughly speaking, “seeing time” – therefore, a tool for displaying time and measuring time. While “chronograph” is fixed in modern usage by tradition, it is actually something of an outdated term, as it means “recording time” and was coined to describe the operation of ink chronographs, most of which were actually timers rather than chronographs.

The only potential problem is that this is a fairly large watch with a diameter of 43 mm. But the Chronoscope is actually thinner than the hand-wound Moonwatch Master Chronometer (42mm x 13.58), so the proportions seem right. In addition, you need to squint to see the dial clearly. If it were much smaller, then the numbers on it would also decrease in size. They would be more purely decorative than potentially useful.
If you are looking for a watch that is technically modern, but has all three classic chronometric scales – heart rate monitor, telemetry and tachymeter, then Chronoscope does not have many competitors. The watch contains the informative value of antique chronographs with a triple scale, but in a more modern interpretation.
