Diamond buyout in Moscow: a gemmologist's appraisal in minutes, payment on the same day

Privilegia pawnshop buys diamonds: stones set in jewellery with GIA, IGI, HRD, AGT and other laboratory certificates — from small to large investment stones.

The appraisal is based on four characteristics of the stone — carat weight, colour, clarity and cut quality — adjusted for fluorescence and for the laboratory that issued the certificate. We calculate from current secondary-market quotes, not from the retail price in a shop.

If you have the certificate at hand, we will name a preliminary price from its number within minutes, before you even come in.

The deal is formalised by a purchase and sale agreement with sole proprietor N.V. Bayandurova, OGRNIP 319774600359848. The appraisal takes place in front of you: the stone never leaves the meeting room, and you see every measurement and check yourself.

Two ways to sell a diamond

The owner of the stone can choose between:

• Buyout. Money on the day you come in, the price is fixed straight away.

• Consignment sale. We take care of finding a buyer, presenting your diamond through our own sales channels and partner network. This format lets you count on a better price than a direct buyout. Payment is made after the stone is sold, minus a commission agreed in advance.

The appraisal is the same in both cases. The difference is in the amount and in how long the sale takes.

Direct buyout
  • Speed: 20–30 minutes at the office.
  • Price: an individual offer based on the gemmological appraisal and the current secondary market.
  • Payment: the agreed amount in full on the day you come in.
  • Who it suits: owners who value speed, a transparent deal and getting the money without waiting for a buyer.

Consignment sale
  • Selling time: individual, depends on the diamond's characteristics and market demand.
  • Price: a chance to get more than with a direct buyout.
  • Payment: after the diamond is sold, minus the agreed commission.
  • Who it suits: owners who want the best possible terms and are ready for a longer selling period.

How the diamond buyout price is calculated

The value of a diamond is determined individually based on its gemmological characteristics and the current situation on the secondary market. The appraisal takes into account carat weight, colour, clarity, cut quality and shape, fluorescence, the presence of a gemmological certificate and other features of the stone. The final buyout price is set after a professional inspection of the diamond.

Carat weight and thresholds

Carat weight is one of the main characteristics that determine a diamond's value. The price per carat depends on the weight category and the combination of the stone's quality characteristics. That is why two diamonds with a small difference in weight can differ significantly in price.

Colour

Diamonds of the standard colour range are graded on the international GIA scale from D to Z. Fancy-colour diamonds (Fancy Color) form a separate category. The appraisal takes into account the intensity, hue and distribution of the colour.

Clarity

A diamond's clarity is determined by the presence, number, size, location and nature of its internal and external characteristics. We assess not only the clarity grade but also how inclusions affect the stone's appearance, transparency and durability.

Cut quality, polish and symmetry

Proportions, symmetry and polish directly affect a diamond's appearance and market value. The appraisal takes into account the specifics of the particular cut, the quality of the finish and the stone's visual characteristics.

Fluorescence

Fluorescence is the ability of some diamonds to emit visible light under ultraviolet radiation. Its effect on value depends on the intensity and colour of the glow and on the other characteristics of the particular diamond.

Gemmological certificate

We work with diamonds that have GIA, IGI, HRD Antwerp and other gemmological laboratory certificates. A certificate lets us use the characteristics established by the laboratory for the preliminary appraisal. Every stone is still additionally checked by our specialists.

Cut shape and liquidity

The round brilliant cut (Kr-57) and the various fancy shapes each have their own pricing specifics. The value takes into account the cut shape, proportions, the diamond's characteristics and the demand for such stones on the secondary market.

How Privilegia pawnshop differs from an ordinary buying shop and a private buyer

Frequently asked questions about selling diamonds in Moscow

Answers about the price, stone characteristics, certificates and the legal side of selling diamonds.
How much is a 1-carat diamond worth when you sell it?
One-carat diamonds can differ in price several times over. A 1 ct stone of colour D, clarity IF and Excellent cut and a stone of the same weight in colour K with SI2 clarity are two goods of fundamentally different value. That is why there is no honest answer of the “so much per carat” kind. Give us the characteristics or the certificate number, and we will name a price within minutes.
Why is a diamond worth less than I paid for it in the shop?
A retail price includes the chain's mark-up, the jeweller's work, the setting, logistics and VAT. The secondary market pays for the stone itself, without that part. The gap is especially noticeable for mass-market pieces, where the stone accounts for only a small share of the price. This is how the market works, not one buyer's opinion: any professional trader will give you a comparable price. We show you the calculation — the base we used and the discount we applied.
Where can I sell a diamond at a good price in Moscow?
Where the stone is appraised by a gemmologist, not a merchandise appraiser. An ordinary buying shop often barely counts the diamond and does not pay for it at all — you only get money for the metal of the setting. We value the stone separately by its carat weight, colour, clarity and cut, and this is included in the price.
Do you buy diamonds without a certificate?
No. We only buy diamonds with certificates.
What do colour 3 and clarity 4 in a Russian certificate mean on the GIA scale?
Roughly, colour 3 corresponds to GIA grade G and clarity 4 to VS1. The match is approximate: the Russian and international systems are built on different principles, and there is no direct conversion between them. An inspection of the stone gives the exact assessment.
How does a natural diamond differ from a lab-grown one, and do you buy lab-grown diamonds?
Lab-grown stones (HPHT and CVD) are identical to natural ones in composition and properties, but they are produced industrially, cost many times less, and their market price keeps falling. They cannot be told apart by eye. We determine the origin of the stone and only buy stones of natural origin.
How is a diamond's authenticity checked?
We match the laser inscription on the girdle with the number in the certificate. A visual inspection under a microscope rules out moissanite, cubic zirconia and glass. The microscope inspection also shows the nature of the inclusions, the condition of the girdle and the quality of the cut. Ultraviolet light reveals fluorescence and helps spot fracture filling.
Do you appraise diamonds without removing them from the piece?
Yes. As a rule, the setting allows us to see the number inscribed on the stone's girdle through a microscope and to carry out a basic examination.
Do you buy small diamonds, loose stones and melee?
No. We only buy precious stones with certificates from a gemmological laboratory.
What is fluorescence and how does it affect the price?
It is the glow of the stone under ultraviolet light. In diamonds of the high colour grades (D–F), strong blue fluorescence lowers the price, as it can give the stone a milky look in bright light. In stones of grades I–K, it can visually whiten the stone and has almost no effect on the price. This characteristic is often overlooked in a self-assessment.
Do you buy coloured diamonds?
Yes: yellow, cognac, pink, blue, green and black. Fancy colours have their own scale — what is assessed is the intensity and purity of the hue, not how close the stone is to colourless. A natural pink or blue stone can be worth many times more than a colourless one of the same weight.
What if the stone has been treated — fracture-filled or laser-drilled?
We detect this during the inspection and tell you directly. We do not buy treated stones.
How is selling a diamond different from pawning it?
A buyout is a final deal: the stone becomes ours, and the money is yours with no obligations. A pledge is a loan secured by the stone: once the debt is repaid, the diamond is returned to its owner.
How long do the appraisal and the payment take?
From the certificate number — a preliminary price online within minutes. An in-person appraisal at the office takes 20–40 minutes. Payment is made immediately after the agreement is signed.
