Among all the various materials that Hublot uses to create its watches, SAXEM is one of the most high–tech and unusual. Like sapphire, SAXEM is incredibly hard and transparent, although the colors that can be obtained with it are richer and brighter than using synthetic sapphire. Hublot first started working with SAXEM in 2019. The new Hublot Big Bang Unico Green SAXEM watch, released in a limited edition of 100, takes the base of the 42mm Big Bang chronograph and gives it a fully transparent green exterior structure that extends both to the case and the rubber strap.

The first Hublot watches with a SAXEM case were the green 2019 SAXEM Big Bang MP-11, and just last year, in 2023, Hublot announced the neon yellow version of the SAXEM Big Bang Tourbillon. Originally developed for the satellite industry, SAXEM is essentially a relative of sapphire, and both materials are based on aluminum oxide. Sapphire is colored using metal oxides, whereas SAXEM colors are created using rare earth elements (SAXEM stands for “Sapphire alumina and rare Earth mineral”).

SAXEM is a compound of a material that gets its color from rare earth minerals and has a cubic (four-sided) shape. Unlike a sapphire crystal, which gets its color from metal oxides and has a trigonal (three-sided) structure.

All the sapphire glasses and creations of SAXEM are born in the production of Hublot in Nyon, Switzerland. All of this is located in the research and development department of Hublot. Since its first release of SAXEM in 2019, they have developed two shades of SAXEM: “Mellow Yellow” and “Astroturf Green”.

Despite the completely new case material, the actual design and construction of the new Hublot Big Bang Unico Green SAXEM watches are very similar to those found among the standard models in this series: their diameter is 42 mm and their thickness is 14.5 mm. This means that they will have the same appearance on the wrist as the 42mm Big Bang Unico watches from the main collection.

As expected, clear sapphire glasses are mounted on both the dial and the back of the watch, and the green components of the SAXEM case are secured with black titanium H-shaped screws. Some of the 42mm Hublot Big Bang watches with metal or ceramic cases are capable of providing users with water resistance up to 100 meters. The new Bang Unico Green SAXEM watch has a water resistance of 50 meters.

The Hublot Big Bang Unico Green SAXEM is equipped with a matching transparent green rubber strap with a linear grooved texture running along the outer surface. Like the rest of the current Big Bang Unico series, the strap is attached to the case using the proprietary One-Click system, which allows users to quickly replace the strap by pressing two trapezoidal buttons located on the case opposite the surface of the built-in watch lugs. The transparent green rubber strap is complemented by a titanium folding clasp with black trim.

The all-green Hublot Big Bang Unico Green SAXEM theme also applies to the dial, and although the actual design and layout are identical to the rest of the series, all the various markings and design elements are now displayed in bright color.

Having a skeletonized appearance with polished black elements of the composite resin dial, the hands and frames of the hour markers are made in matte black and filled with a specially designed luminescent material of the same shade of green as the rest of the watch. Apart from the black and green color scheme, the rest of the dial is largely the same as the standard 42mm Big Bang Unico models, with a second counter at 9 o’clock and a skeletonized 60-minute chronograph counter at 3 o’clock, which also includes a date window on the transparent surface of the register.

The Hublot Big Bang Unico Green SAXEM watch is equipped with a proprietary chronograph movement with automatic reverse HUB1280 UNICO 2. The Hublot caliber consists of 354 parts and is equipped with a skeletonized tungsten rotor, decorated with 43 stones. The HUB1280 UNICO 2 mechanism operates at a frequency of 28,800 half-vibrations per hour (4 Hz) with a power reserve of about 72 hours. In addition to the skeletonized date display and the reverse function, the HUB1280 movement also features a column wheel on the front of the watch, allowing wearers to see its movement through the delicate dial at 6 o’clock each time the chronograph is used.
