Zenith Chronomaster Original

For the first time, Zenith introduced a black tricolor dial for the Chronomaster Original, a modern interpretation of the 1969 A386 El Primero model. The Chronomaster Original has a 38 mm stainless steel case, a chronograph with an accuracy of 1/10 of a second, and the distinctive tricolor counters of the original.

Until now, the traditional El Primero models have always had a creamy-white dial with recognizable tricolor counters. Zenith has rethought this tricolor and released a watch with a black dial, as well as flipped the chronograph scales and changed the date wheel to black.

Inside there is an El Primero 3600 caliber with a frequency of 5 Hz and a chronograph with a measurement accuracy of 1/10 of a second, that is, the central hand of the chronograph rotates around the dial every 10 seconds. The power reserve is 60 hours. The sapphire window demonstrates the modern architecture of the mechanism with a blue column wheel and a new star-shaped openwork rotor.

The new Chronomaster Original watch with a black dial comes complete with a stainless steel bracelet ($10,000) or a calfskin strap ($9,500) and is already available in Zenith boutiques and retail stores.

Zenith Chronomaster with a black dial looks like a cool modern version of the original El Primero A386. The A386 is the most iconic of Zenith’s 1969 trilogy of watches, featuring the high—frequency movement of the El Primero chronograph. The round-shaped case in the original line, known as the Chronomaster Original, with its distinctive three-color counters has become the brand’s hallmark. By replacing the more traditional silver-and-white dial with a black one, the latest Zenith Chronomaster Original has acquired a more modern look.

In 2021, the range includes watches with a black panda–colored dial with white counters; the difference here is that the background is black, but three overlapping additional dials display classic blue, gray and silver colors – the second hand at 9 o’clock, the 60-second register and the 60-minute register at 3 and 6 hours, respectively. The inner scale changed from black to white, and the outer scale for measuring 1/10 of a second changed from white to black.

On the dial, you can see vintage fonts and logos, overhead hour markers and hands with Super-LumiNova luminescent coating, as well as the bright red central second hand of the chronograph, which goes around the dial in 10 seconds.

The round body of the Chronomaster Original measures 38 mm and features sharp faceted ears, pump-style buttons, a combination of radially ground and polished surfaces, and a virtually non-existent bezel like the A386. The case is protected by a convex sapphire crystal, the case thickness is 12.9 mm, and the degree of water resistance is 50 m.
