Breguet, one of the largest and oldest watch manufacturers in the world, was founded in 1775. In her works, she usually adheres to the canons of deep-rooted traditions. Even watches with rich jewelry are sophisticated and generous, but it’s still old school. The new Marine Haute Joaillerie 9509 Poseidonia watch is a strikingly vibrant, ocean-inspired jewelry watch.

Named after Posidonia oceanica, an algae found in the Mediterranean Sea, sometimes referred to as Neptune’s grass, the new Marine features an iridescent mother-of-pearl dial decorated with 85 baguette-cut gems, forming an elegant floating algae motif. The novelty is radically different from traditional Breguet jewelry watches, especially in versions with colored precious stones.

Poseidonia is available in four variants, each with a different gemstone combination. While the diamond version is decorated only with diamonds, the models with a predominance of emeralds, rubies and sapphires are complemented by various precious stones. For example, amethysts and tsavorites in the sapphire version create color shimmers.

Breguet has a penchant for creating jewelry watches inspired by nature. Thematically, Poseidonia is no different, but it has a much more impressive visual effect. Judging by the photos, the watch will undoubtedly be dazzling and infinitely luxurious.

Watches that are heavily decorated with precious stones tend to look overloaded. The Poseidonia model manages to radiate its own subtle elegance, primarily in a monochrome version with white diamonds.

This elegance mainly stems from the jewel-encrusted dial, which forms seamless and sinuous curves against a shimmering mother-of-pearl background, the perfect material for an ocean-inspired dial. Changing its shades depending on the refraction of light, mother-of-pearl gives a unique glow. Combined with sparkling gems, the result is a mesmerizing and alluring aesthetic that captures the marine spirit of the Marine collection.

The algae motif on the dial, combined with the arrangement of colored stones – dark at the bottom of the bezel and transparent at the top – means that Poseidonia avoids the appearance of a “rainbow watch”, such as the Rolex Daytona Rainbow.

Apart from aesthetics, the quality of Breguet jewelry watches is exemplary. All four versions of the watch have a total of 270 baguette-cut stones, or just over 10 carats, with the exception of the round diamond in the crown.

It is important to note that the baguette-cut gems are not symmetrical, which gives the dial and bezel a more lively look, avoiding the rigid formality of many jewelry watches. This is most evident on the versions with colored stones. The all-encompassing motif extends to the ears of the case, creating a sense of visual continuity. Even the protrusions protecting the crown are decorated with two baguette diamonds.

The folding clasp has a mirrored metal center surrounded by baguette-cut gems to match the bezel. The price of the new product starts from 250,000 CHF.

All four versions have the same 35.8 mm diameter 18-carat white gold case. Although they all have mother-of-pearl dials, the colored gemstone versions feature a white mother-of-pearl dial, while the diamond version features a black Tahitian mother-of-pearl dial.

The diamond version has a twist. Its dial color varies from purple to brown or gray depending on the lighting. The mother-of-pearl for the dial is extracted from oysters found around the islands of Tahiti and French Polynesia. Tahitian mother-of-pearl has a darker color, which better complements the ephemeral and mysterious qualities of Posidonia oceanica on the seabed.

Poseidonia is powered by an automatic movement, Caliber 591C, finished in an irresistible Breguet style. The mechanism is equipped with a trigger wheel and a silicon spring.

It is noteworthy that the wavy white gold rotor is encrusted with the same mother-of-pearl that forms the dial, and its periphery is decorated with diamonds. The bridges of the Marine models are finished with a Cotes de Geneve pattern, reminiscent of the wooden decks of sailing boats.

As a sign of gratitude to Abraham-Louis Breguet, who was engaged in the manufacture of chronometers in the French Navy, the inscription “Horloger de la Marine” – or “Watchmaker in the Navy” – is engraved on the back cover, just as it was on the original Breguet watches of the 19th century.
