The Explorer range is updated with a new version with a diameter of 40 mm. It features even more convenient reading and retains all the qualities that made the Explorer model, one of the first in the line of Rolex watches, an enduring benchmark. Simple, durable, and corrosion—resistant, the new Explorer 40 watch is made of Oystersteel steel, a self-made Rolex alloy.

Thanks to the satin finish of the case ring, bracelet and clasp and the reflections on the polished edges of the case ring, these legendary instrument watches appear in a new light and harmonious design.

Simplicity, durability, excellent readability of readings

An example of strength and reliability, the Oyster Explorer watch case is presented for the first time in a diameter of 40 mm. The body ring on this new model is cut from a single block of Oystersteel steel. The Twinlock crown, complemented by a double sealing system, is tightly screwed onto the case. The sapphire crystal is scratch-resistant and has an anti-reflective coating.

Oystersteel steel gives the watch a magnificent shine. Rolex watches made of this unique material retain their shine even in the most extreme conditions. Oystersteel steel, specially manufactured for Rolex watches, belongs to the 904L steel family, which is widely used in the field of high technology, the aerospace sector and the chemical industry. In terms of excellent anti-corrosion properties, they can only be compared with precious metals.

The Explorer 40 features excellent readability under all circumstances thanks to the Chromalight display, which provides a long—lasting blue glow in total darkness and white in daylight. The exclusive phosphor is characterized by a glow that surpasses the usual standards in watchmaking.

Released in the late 1930s, this three‑link bracelet is highly durable and remains one of the most common in the Oyster Perpetual collection.
