Grade 5 titanium is a biocompatible alloy characterized by excellent corrosion resistance and increased strength, which creates ideal conditions for the functioning of the wheel system. The alloy consists of 90% Grade 5 titanium, 6% aluminum and 4% vanadium. This composition gives the alloy improved mechanical properties, due to which it is widely used in the automotive industry. It makes the structure as rigid as possible, and the surface is perfectly smooth – a necessary condition for the perfect operation of the wheel drive. The skeletonized board has undergone a separate series of comprehensive tests to ensure compliance with high strength requirements. As a result, RMUP-01 can withstand accelerations exceeding 5000 g. Mechanism thickness: 1.18 mm

ULTRA-THIN TITANIUM BODY

Breaking with the established stylistic codes of Richard Mille, but remaining true to the identity and spirit of the brand, this model pushes even further the boundaries of what is possible in solving the difficult task of reducing the thickness of the watch to ultra–small sizes. With a thickness of only 1.75 mm, the RM UP-01 Ferrari watch perfectly embodies the Richard Mille philosophy, according to which the technical content of the model determines its aesthetics. The tonneau body is being transformed again, adapting to the new model. Due to the extremely small thickness of the RM UP-01, all titanium body parts are manufactured in the Richard Mille machine workshop with very strict machining tolerances of the order of one micron. The legendary emblem in the form of a prancing horse and all serial numbers are laser-engraved on the case.

FERRARI: IT’S ALWAYS WORTHY OF ATTENTION

“The collaboration between Richard Mille and Ferrari, particularly evident in the choice of materials and watch design, has given the project the competitive spirit that is inseparable from most daring endeavors.
The RM UP-01 Ferrari watch conveys an associative connection with the values of the Ferrari brand, known for its sporty, elegant and instantly recognizable movements. His models know no compromises and often go against the prevailing trends, offering a completely new aesthetic. The RM UP-01 Ferrari embodies the best know-how that can produce two legendary brands that combine their ideas and vision, their developments and shared values. “

UNIQUE GOAL

Even striving for the maximum thinness of the case, we wanted the new watch to meet the same requirements as all our other models. We set ourselves the task of making watches that would not be “conceptual”, but designed for daily use.

PERFECTION DEFINING STYLE

The RM UP-01 model, created in collaboration with the Ferrari team, is the result of many years of work, dozens of prototypes and more than 6,000 hours of development and laboratory testing.

The challenge of creating ultrathin watches eliminated the possibility of using a traditional watch movement with a multi-level arrangement of gears and hands. Realizing the impossibility of placing all the components on a wider board, Richard Mille’s craftsmen decided to distribute them in such a way as to create an ideal symbiosis of mechanism and housing, with one providing the strength and rigidity of the other. We tried to keep the traditional architecture in which the mechanism is assembled in a housing, rather than an assembly where the back cover duplicates the board to ensure impact resistance under all circumstances.

GRADE 5 TITANIUM BOARD AND BRIDGES

The board and axles of the RMUP-01 mechanism are made of Grade 5 titanium, a biocompatible alloy characterized by high corrosion resistance and exceptional strength, ensuring optimal wheel drive performance. The alloy consists of 90% Grade 5 titanium, 6% aluminum and 4% vanadium. This composition gives the alloy improved mechanical properties, due to which it is widely used in the aerospace industry and in the automotive industry. These Grade 5 titanium components give the entire structure the high rigidity and flatness necessary for perfect operation of the wheel drive.
The skeletonized board has been subjected to a separate series of comprehensive tests to ensure compliance with high strength requirements. This allows the RMUP-01 caliber to withstand accelerations exceeding 5000 g. Mechanism thickness: 1.18 mm

FUNCTION SELECTOR

“The function selector is integrated into the bezel and is located between the 10 and 11 o’clock marks. It allows you to select between the factory (W) and manual readout (H) functions by simply turning the head.
After selecting the function, the time setting or clock winding is performed by rotating the second head located between the 7 and 8 o’clock marks.
The heads are surrounded by two black ceramic inserts that protect the bezel from friction and ensure water resistance.”

PATENTED ULTRATHIN TITANIUM DESCENT AND VARIABLE INERTIA BALANCE

When developing the ultra-thin RM UP-01 mechanism, Audemars Piguet Le Locle and Richard Mille engineers created a new type of escapement with a titanium balance wheel, which significantly reduced the thickness of the caliber without compromising the reliability of the traditional Swiss anchor escapement.
The parts that thicken the traditional descent most of all are the spear and the safety device roller. They serve to prevent the fork from being transferred from one limiting pin to another in the event of shocks or shocks to which the watch may be subjected.
The new patented ultrathin descent does not have these two parts, and the safety function is performed directly by the anchor fork, which has therefore been lengthened and its arms modified, which has led to a significant reduction in the height of the anchor.

The escapement transfers energy to a balance with variable inertia, which ensures high stability of movement after disassembly and assembly operations or exposure to shocks and strong vibrations on the watch. Thus, the watch movement has optimal chronometric accuracy, which is maintained for a long time. Instead of a thermometer, the new model
uses 6 adjustment weights, which are mounted directly on the rim of the balance, to fine-tune the stroke with a high degree of reproducibility.

WIND-UP DRUM WITH INCREASED ROTATION SPEED (6 HOURS PER REVOLUTION INSTEAD OF 7.5 HOURS)

A wind-up drum of this type has the following advantages:
• A significant reduction in the risk of “gluing” the coils of the winding spring with better functional characteristics.
• Minimal difference in the amount of torque provided by the spring, ideal power reserve/uniformity ratio.

IN THE FIGHT FOR THE LAST HUNDREDTHS

The RM UP-01 Ferrari from Richard Mille is an ultrathin watch with a thickness of only 1.75 mm. This incredible technical achievement embodies a new approach to watch mechanics, setting new design methods in order to adapt the spectacular to everyday situations.
To implement this project, we had to put aside all our accumulated experience and all possible watch standards. This is exactly what we did in our collaboration with Audemars Piguet Le Locle laboratories. Reducing the thickness by a few more millimeters was an extremely difficult task, it took a lot of time.”

TITANIUM CASE GRADE 5

The design and execution of the watch as a whole indicate an integrated approach to the development of the mechanism and body, which form a single and harmonious whole. For the first time in the Richard Mille collection, an instantly recognizable watch case is presented in such a new form. Its exceptionally thin format perfectly embodies the philosophy of Richard Mille, according to which the technical content of a model determines its aesthetics. The tonneau body is being transformed again, adapting to the new model.
The RM UP-01 watch case retains its former qualities, demonstrating the same smooth lines and the same attention to the smallest details, as evidenced by the large number of technical operations required to manufacture the bezel, the monoblock case ring and the back cover.

TITANIUM GRADE 5

The case is entirely made of Grade 5 titanium, an extremely lightweight material capable of withstanding high loads, as confirmed by a series of rigorous laboratory tests. The monoblock design of the case increases its durability and guarantees water resistance up to 1 atm (10 m).
Due to the extremely small thickness of the RM UP-01 body, all parts are manufactured in the Richard Mille machine workshop with very strict machining tolerances of the order of one micron.
The crown caps are surrounded by two black ceramic inserts that protect the bezel from friction and ensure water resistance.
The back cover and bezel have a matte finish with polished chamfers. The legendary emblem in the form of a prancing horse and all serial numbers are laser-engraved on the case. The unique ultra-thin body is assembled using 13 screws with flutes made of Grade 5 titanium and wear-resistant washers made of 316L stainless steel.
