Roger Dubuis Excalibur Spider Countach DT/X

The Lamborghini Countach’s performance has allowed it to take its rightful place among supercars. Cars have been moving towards their extreme angular design for decades. From 1974 to 1990, the car qualified in the pin-up style of the era. His image on the posters of the young man was placed next to posters of Samantha Fox.

Thirty years after the last Countach left the factory, Lamborghini announced in August this year a remake of the 21st century that cares about the environment: the Lamborghini Countach LPI 800-4 hybrid is combined with a “traditional” 6.5 L V12 internal combustion engine with a capacity of 770 hp. 112 cars are planned to be produced.

The perfect complement to this crazy idea of engineers and designers is the Roger Dubuis Excalibur Spider Countach DT/X. The Excalibur Spider Countach DT/X watch, a new result of the partnership between Roger Dubuis and Lamborghini Squadra Corse, is a vivid example of the collaboration of engineers looking to the future with virtuoso watchmakers. Their unsurpassed aesthetics, transferred from the race track to the wrist, embodies all the characteristic design elements of the car of the same name — the silhouette baseline running from the front to the rear, as well as sharp futuristic corners.

There are many parallels between a watch and a supercar, as Roger Dubuis spared no effort to make his Excalibur Spider Countach DT/X a technical and aesthetic counterpart to the LPI 800-4. It was named RD112 to reflect the planned production volume of the LPI 800-4. The watch was created from scratch, just like GT racing cars are designed and manufactured at Squadra Corse’s own facility; each component is hand-crafted by craftsmen in Geneva and awarded the Poinçon de Genève.

The Excalibur Spider Countach DT/X watch is equipped with a caliber fully developed and manufactured in-house, which is designed to match the performance of a supercar engine. Another impressive detail is the mechanical double floating tourbillon: both tourbillons are tilted at exactly 90° to each other to compensate for the effects of gravity not only horizontally, but also vertically. In addition, the use of lightweight materials in the tourbillon carriages ensures a 72-hour power reserve.

The recognizable geometry of the Periscopio roof and NACA air intakes, displayed on this striking watch in a scaled—down manner, is a tribute to the strong partnership that has developed between the two rebellious brands. The red and black color scheme of the car’s interior is reproduced in the watch in the grooves of the engraving, on individual sections of the glass and on the inner strap.

This heritage-inspired watch with a 47mm case is available in a limited edition of eight pieces in total. The tourbillons are equipped with ultralight titanium frames. The Countach’s taillights find their expression in a pair of triple hexagons framing the tourbillons. The uniqueness of this technical achievement, which guarantees the utmost accuracy, was awarded the seal of excellence in the form of the Geneva Stamp.

The skeletonized, three-dimensional, ultra-ergonomically shaped rubber strap ensures maximum breathability and mobility. It is made of several materials in the style of its automotive prototype, while in terms of technology, role models were found from another innovative partner, Pirelli tire expert.

Roger Dubuis made every effort to create the case: using an exclusive high-tech mineral composite fiber (MCF), Roger Dubuis was able to reproduce the exact shade of the new Countach for the design of the case and the caliber of the watch – the mother-of-pearl white Bianco Siderale. This is the color that Ferruccio Lamborghini defined for his own Countach in 1980. Made from 99.95% silicon dioxide and manufactured using the Sheet Molding Compound (SMC) process, the MCF material is 2.5 times lighter than ceramic and 13% lighter than carbon SMC.

There are easier ways to cement the connection between a car and watchmaking. But the brand of “hyper-watchmaking” Roger Dubuis will have very few analogues in this field. Extremity is what makes Lamborghini what it is, and that’s the main guiding principle of Roger Dubuis, confirming his relationship with Squadra Corse and making his watch special.
